About Katie

A woman with brown hair looking up at a small, decorative bird figurine placed on her forehead. The bird is black with a bright red chest and small white eyes.

I explore personal themes such as joy, comfort, family, and home through vivid multimedia paintings and drawings. Growing up, I was always a homebody, preferring to stay in while friends and acquaintances ventured out to explore the world. As I grow older, this fact remains true, even more so now than ever. Home is a refuge, a familiar place filled with security and rejuvenation. A place full of routine and order. My connection to home arises not only from the place itself but because everything that is important to me resides within it. My belongings, memories, childhood, and loved ones are all held within the walls I call home.

In my current creative journey, birds have become a recurring motif in my work, symbolizing the warmth and comfort I feel when I am at home and with my family. Whether the birds I depict are a favorite of a family member or ones I see through the window every day, each species I portray connects to my memories. My work bursts with bright washes of color and lively polka dots, capturing the joyful emotions I associate with memories of home, childhood, and the people within.

Working primarily on 2D and 3D surfaces, I create art using a variety of mediums, including acrylic, graphite, ink, colored pencils, and more. This diversity of materials allows me to play within my creative process, experimenting with layers and techniques. I enjoy the variety in textures, colors, and finishes these mediums produce, inspiring me to explore their endless possibilities.

Creative Process

As a multimedia artist, I work with a variety of materials, including paper, wood, acrylics, oils, inks, crayons, colored pencils, graphite, wire, clay, and more. This diverse selection of materials adds an enjoyable element to my creative process, infusing a sense of playfulness into the finished works.

The process begins with studies. Observing and sketching figures helps me understand proportion and allows me to explore a figure’s distinct features.

Whenever I paint on wood or canvas, I begin each piece with a foundational wash of color, typically using Magenta, Indian Yellow, Payne's gray, or a blend of these hues. I appreciate the lively quality of the Magenta and Indian Yellow pigments, as well as the depth offered by Payne’s gray.

, I layer watered-down paints onto the surface, gradually building their forms and allowing a sense of depth to emerge. Throughout this process, I incorporate dots of different sizes, replicating the texture and colors of feathers.
